HCMC coronavirus tally tops 18,000

Vietnam recorded 1,196 new local Covid-19 cases Wednesday noon, including 971 new cases in HCMC, raising the city's tally in the new wave to 18,210.

115 other cases were recorded in Tien Giang, 91 in Dong Thap, eight in Phu Yen, three in Ben Tre, two in Bac Giang and one each in Thua Thien-Hue, Vinh Phuc, Lao Cai, Lam Dong, Nghe An and Hanoi.

888 cases in HCMC have been contained within quarantine zones and locked down areas, and 83 are being contact traced.

96 cases in the Mekong Delta's Tien Giang have been contained within quarantine zones and locked down areas, two returned from HCMC, and 17 are being contact traced.

All the cases in the delta's Dong Thap, the northern Bac Giang, the central Thua Thien-Hue and Hanoi are either close contact cases or contained within quarantine zones and locked down areas.

Four cases in the central Phu Yen are close contact cases, and four are being contact traced.

The cases in the Mekong Delta's Ben Tre are linked to the Binh Dien Market in HCMC.

The case in the northern Lao Cai, a 26-year-old man, is a driver along the North-South National Highway.

The case in the central Nghe An, a 81-year-old man, is being contact traced.

All the cases in the northern Vinh Phuc and the Central Highlands' Lam Dong returned from HCMC.

Since the new wave of Covid-19 emerged in Vietnam on April 27, the nation has recorded 33,035 community infections in 58 cities and provinces. The country has recorded 2,101 cases on Wednesday.
